My mower has given endless trouble in recent times with the belts slipping off. I have had everything checked on it, tension, alignment etc. by the dealers and now they have decided that the belt i really need is a little shorter than the normal ones they offer for sale. I decided to order belts myself and got the Belt V-type 954-04045 but it still slips off after getting very hot and burnt out. I've noticed that the belt is touching itself - that is - the outside of belt on pulley idler 4.25" is touching the inside of belt running from pulley under cover for belt 6.00" to spindle assembly 6.3". It also rubs on the metal bracket connected to the back of idler pivot in the same area.
I figure that if i could get a belt that is a little shorter than the one i mentioned above, it would pull the pivot assembly more forward and release that rubbing at the back of the pulley attached to that pivot.
Can you help???

I would say, you are on the right track. If you have rotating parts touching, your belt maybe to long or the belt is not put on correctly. Find the info in your owner's manual to install a new belt, check all the pulleys, and check the belt tensioner. When you put a new belt on, make sure the belt is wide enough so the "V" of the belt rides high in the pulley. If the "V" is to low in the pulley, the belt can bottom out in the pulley, slip, and get hot.
I hope I have helped.
