Installation Tips

Supposing that you’re not replacing the axle as part of routine maintenance the most difficult part is going to be removing the inner half of the broken axle, especially if you were unfortunate as I was to have it shear off flush with the inner knuckle leaving nothing to grab on to. Luckily there is an artifact bore from when the axle was lathed that you can ream out and tap. I chose 5/16” but I guess you could drill out 3/8 too. After you have the hole bored and tapped insert threaded rod with enough beyond the knuckle that you can put a nut onto it. Take a piece of steel angle or bar and bore a hole in the middle so that it can slip over the threaded rod. Then put your nut on. Loosen or remove the axle set screw on top of the axle housing (apparently some New Hollands also have a set screw on the bottom but mine did not). Tighten down the nut that you placed on the threaded rod slowly so that it begins to draw the inner half of the axle out of the axle housing. From there replacement with the new part should be fairly intuitive. Remember to add gear lubricant if you lost some in the process of removing the old axle.
