Installation Tips

(6 hours)
My mechanical ability is fairly high, was in Air Force worked on the jets, built composite aircraft, and am now a Field Service Engineer working on Medical equipment. My dad was a mechanic for Caterpillar as long as I can remember. The difficulty of installation has nothing to do with the part but with the way the tractor is assembled. Also a lot of my tools are in a storage unit so I had to do it with what I had at the house. The time consuming part is getting to the bolts that hold the driveshaft onto HST and the 2 fan bolts. You have to remove the floor board and partially remove the fender/seat assembly. I did not remove the driveshaft from the tractor. I removed the front spacer and then removed the bolt securing shaft to the spline shaft from HST and worked it around to where I could get to the bolts holding fan on, then reassembled it.

Kubota BX2230D lawn/garden tractor project: Due to lose of all hydraulic operating systems during mowing incident I had to remove and replace the entire propeller shaft assembly from front coupling to HST fan a total of 39 individual parts, which all are not shown here. 37 of those parts are just the pieces for the propeller shat assembly itself. Just assembling the shaft assembly portion took several hours. The shaft assembly can only be removed from the tractor through the top due to welded frame plates. Removal of the battery, foot pedal, floor mat, floor board, seat, and both left and right control lever shrouds is required. Beginning to end; dismantle shaft assembly access area, remove old shaft assembly and HST fan, assemble the new shaft assembly, install new shaft assembly and HST fan, double check all torques and installation, temporarily reinstall battery and foot pedal, start engine, check/test all hydraulic operating system functions for proper operation, all good. Remove battery and foot pedal again. Reinstall floor board, floor mat, left and right control lever shrouds, battery, foot pedal and seat. Beginning to end, I spent approximately 5 hours a day for 4 days. There was nothing easy about this project. Point of interest; I have owned this Kubota for 17 years and never realized the propeller shaft couplings were the break-away style, which allows for the coupling itself to fail before causing extreme damage to the engine and transmission. Yes, you have to assemble the individual small ball bearings and very small compression O-ring seals, which go inside the 2 couplings; 8 ball bearings and 8 compression seals total. If you replace the coupling you need to replace the ball bearings and compression seals in each coupling. There is nothing easy about this project; just time and attention.

I found it much easier to remove the front two engine mounts and top nuts only on rear mounts. Lift engine up about 1 1/2" and pull forward about 4". No need to disconnect wiring or any hoses. Caution, use care not to damage engine cooling fan and shroud. Took me about 4 hours but I also serviced all filters and changed engine oil. Good luck!!

The rear pinch bolt was very close to the Hydrostatic case . I removed the 12 mm bolt and installed an Allen head bolt which allowed more clearance.
