I used bolts provided. But, I may replace them with stronger 3/8 bolts no instructions were supplied.

Took tips from other reviews and used a punch to mark the holes and a smaller bit to make a pilot hole. Install couldn't be easier. Be liberal with the cutting oil and don't overheat the drill bit. Nice sturdy guard
