Installation Tips

I would not recommend trying to put this in from under the tractor. I spent 4 grueling hours trying every angle to get the bolts lined up. I never was able to get the threads started and I broke a few cooling fins on the housing during the attempts. I came at it with a fresh head the next day and decided to go in from the top. Removing the seat, ROPs and rear fender assembly took about 30 minutes. Less than 2 minutes later I had the fan installed. Tips for fender removal: use a heat gun to get the plastic knobs off mower deck and 3 point hitch rate adjusters, don't forget to make sure your diff lock pedal is through its slot when putting it back together. I got all the way through reassembly before I realized I didn't, and had to take it all back apart again to get it through.

I installed the fan from the top because I had my plastic fender off to repair it. I decided to completely fiberglass the under area. First, buy or dig for those POS ultra-flat wrenches we all get when we buy items that need to be assembled. I’ve saved them over the years and added longer handles to them. I put the transmission in neutral and lined up the bolt hole to sit between the tranny cooling fins. With the bolt and washers in half of the fan, I slowly and painstakingly, with two fingers, made a complete turn,n grasping a thread or two. Then, with the flat wrench, I turned the bolt as far as it would go without tightening. After turning the shaft to line up the other bolt hole, I slipped the other half of the fan and repeated the process. I was then able to use a regular wrench to tighten both bolts. It was a bad angle, but it worked. The install took me one hour and fifteen minutes.

The fan is well made, but the location is terrible. I fought getting the bolts started for some time before pulling the fan out and drilling out the bolt holes slightly larger. This allowed the bolts to spin, then I was able to get them started using long reach needle nose pliers. Make sure to leave the first one loose enough to allow the fan to pivot a little (but in enough to clear the transmission when turning) otherwise the pliers won’t fit. I was only able to start the bolts on the right side where there’s a little more room for the bolt length. Once started, an open-end wrench brought it home but it’s a slow process given the very limited access.

I could not get the bolts in from under the tractor due to lack of space. I ended up removing the rear fender to gain access. Which at that point installation was a breeze. The 2-piece fan was still well worth it to not have to undo motor mounts and mess with the fan shaft. Removing the fender was not too difficult. Took about 30 minutes and when back together just fine.

I have replaced the HST fan multiple times on my tractor. I find that removing the floor plate above the fan is easier for me to do the work than from below. One note: this part does not fit a bx1800 as shown on the instructions. I had to turn it around backwards to mount it. We will see how it holds up.
