#TC230-13040 Axle Case Oil Seal

The job would’ve been a lot easier with good snap ring pliers. Mine were cheap and struggled to get the snap rings out and then back in.

Remove the bottom hub case plug by prying out with a screwdriver in the openings around it, remove first circlip with snap ring pliers and shim which will let the bottom pinion gear / bearing assembly slip right out. Remove the pinion shaft and find the second circlip and shim at the case’s middle bearing which will allow the pivot head assembly pull out from the top, if you have the hub assembly removed from the tractor (recommended) you can also remove the two top pinion gears to make it a little lighter and easier to handle, removal is same as it’s held in with a circlip and they both slide right out. Remove and install oil seal, I did this with a slide hammer- style oil seal puller as there is nothing to pry against with a hook type seal remover, reinstall pivot head with gear oil applied to mating surfaces, you’ll likely need to lightly sand rust and pitting from pivot head sealing surface, I used a wire brush, then light 400 grit Dremel sanding wheel and finished with 800 grit wet sandpaper with valve grinding compound to get a nice uniform polish on the pivot head’s seal surface. Parts cleaner to remove grit, lightly coated new oil on surface and it slid right back together with only a light tap with a rubber mallet / dead blow hammer, reinstall clips and gears, reinstall new plug on the bottom of the hub assembly, reinstalled on axle and refilled axle with fresh gear oil. Easy process overall but only if you have the right tools and a clean place to work.
