SHANK TIP DIMPLE

Installation Tips

(15 minutes)
I used my 20 ton shop press with a 3/4” pointed concrete stake end to dimple the tooth mount onto my ripper. I used my drill press to drill out the dimple on the side of the old tooth and hammered it off.

Not Messick's fault but the shank tip was housing wasn't formed all the way before being welded on so it took some die grinding to get it on far enough to dimple it.

Getting the old one off was the most time consuming part of this job. I don't have a way to dimple in the new one so I welded them in place. We'll see how that works out. Next time I need to replace on I'll just grind off the weld.

Use an air hammer, mount in vice horizontal and mark the spot. No heating or pounding required.

Not having an acetylene torch, most of my time was spent getting the broken tip off of the shank. Drilled out the dimples and then hammered it off. Tack welded the new tip to the shank rather than trying to press new dimples in the replacement tip.

I don't dimple these on my land pride land plane - I weld them on - and when they wear down - I grind off the weld and wend another tip on. Much simpler!
