Most people don't even know about these filters, but most mechanics recommend they be changed every 600 to 1000 hrs. It's located on the back of the engine, right in front of the brake master cylinder. I get to it from the exhaust side. You need to be super careful not to drop any of the bolts down inside the engine. I usually put shop rags or packing paper in around the bottom of the filter as I take out or put in the 3 filter bolts. That way, if I lose one, it won't go down into the engine. BTW, it's a good idea to put blue thread lock on the 3 filter bolts-- you don't want them coming off!

I don't know how everyone else changes the crankcase breather filter, but I opted to take the exhaust system completely off. It was a breeze to change once that was out of the road. I was working on a NH T8; I unclamped the exhaust right beside the filter, unbolted the whole assembly, and used the shop crane to lift it out as one big piece.
