1. Take the step off to get easier access.
2. Start the nut on the first few threads, then insert the pipe all the way before tightening the nut the rest of the way.

I removed the pump to install. I got the lines pushed in and threads started prior to bolting pump back to the block. Use these fittings,they are worth the price!
