BX1880 / BX2380 / BX2680 Owner Service Guide

The air cleaner uses a single dry paper element. Clean it every 100 hours and replace it every 1000 hours or once a year, whichever comes first. In dusty conditions, clean it more often than the 100-hour interval. A clogged element reduces engine power and causes black exhaust smoke.

IntervalClean every 100 hours. Replace every 1000 hours or 1 year. Open the evacuator valve weekly, or daily in dusty conditions.

Air cleaner layout

Open the hood to reach the air cleaner. The BX1880 and BX2380 share one air cleaner design and the BX2680 uses a larger one, but both are serviced the same way. On both, the rubber evacuator valve is on the bottom of the cover.

Evacuator valve

The evacuator valve is a rubber duckbill on the bottom of the cover. Squeeze it open once a week under normal use, or daily when working in dust, to let large dirt particles fall out of the housing. If the lips of the valve are packed with dirt, clean them. A torn or missing valve lets dust into the housing; replace it.

Cleaning the element

  1. Open the hood.
  2. Undo the hook on the air cleaner cover.
  3. Turn the cover clockwise and pull it off.
  4. Pull the element straight out of the housing.
  5. Wipe the inside of the housing and the cover with a clean, dry rag. Do not let dirt fall into the open outlet of the housing.
  6. If the element is covered with dry dust, blow compressed air through it from the inside out while turning the element. Keep the air pressure below 30 psi and hold the nozzle a few inches from the paper. Higher pressure or a nozzle against the paper will tear the media.
  7. If the element has carbon or oil on it, soak it in a mild detergent solution for 15 minutes, wash it several times in water, rinse it with clean water, and let it air dry completely. Do not use heat or compressed air to dry it.
  8. Shine a flashlight inside the element and look through the paper. Replace the element if you see pinholes, tears, or light coming through unevenly, or if the gasket at the end is cracked or flattened.
  9. Install the element and push it fully into the housing.
  10. Install the cover with the arrow marks aligned, turn it counterclockwise to seat it, and fasten the hook. If the cover is not aligned, incoming air bypasses the baffle and loads the element with dust.

The air cleaner uses a dry element. Never oil it.

Replacing the element

Replace the element every 1000 hours or once a year, whichever comes first, even if it looks clean. Also replace it any time it is damaged or will not clean up. Each cleaning wears the paper, so an element that has been cleaned many times should be replaced early. Remove and install the element using the same steps as cleaning.

The BX80 air cleaner does not use an inner safety element. For more on safety elements on Kubota engines, see our video:

Intake hose and clamps

While the hood is open, check the intake hose between the air cleaner and the engine. The hose must be free of cracks and the clamps must be tight. A leak downstream of the element lets unfiltered air into the engine. See hose and line inspection.
