Kubota calls for the fuel injection nozzle opening pressure to be checked every 1500 hours and the fuel injection pump to be checked every 3000 hours. Both checks need a nozzle tester or a pump pressure tester, and Kubota lists them as dealer services. This page explains what is checked and what to watch for between services.
| Interval | Injection nozzles every 1500 hours; injection pump every 3000 hours |
|---|---|
| Tools | Nozzle tester, injection pump pressure tester |
| Parts | Nozzle pieces or nozzle holder kits if a nozzle fails the test |
Signs the injection system needs attention
Have the nozzles and pump checked before the scheduled interval if the engine shows any of these symptoms after the fuel filter, air cleaner and fuel supply have been ruled out:
- The engine is hard to start or will not start.
- The engine runs rough or unevenly.
- Black or dark gray exhaust smoke.
- White or blue exhaust smoke.
- Low power.
- Fuel mixed into the engine oil.
Injection nozzle check
Each engine has three injection nozzles, one per cylinder. The nozzles are removed from the cylinder head and tested on a nozzle tester.
- Opening pressure. The tester handle is moved slowly and the pressure at which fuel begins to spray is read. If it is out of specification, the adjusting washer inside the nozzle holder is changed. A 0.01 mm (0.0004 in.) change in washer thickness changes the opening pressure by about 34 psi.
- Spray pattern. The spray pattern is checked on the tester. If it is poor, the nozzle piece is replaced.
- Valve seat tightness. The nozzle is held at 1849 psi for 10 seconds. If fuel leaks from the tip, the nozzle piece is replaced.
- After any repair, the nozzle is reassembled in clean fuel and the opening pressure is set again.
| Item | Specification, all three models |
|---|---|
| Fuel injection pressure | 1992 to 2132 psi (13.73 to 14.70 MPa) |
| Valve seat tightness | No fuel leak at 1849 psi (12.75 MPa) for 10 seconds |
| Nozzle holder torque | 26 to 28 ft-lbs |
| Nozzle holder assembly torque | 37 to 50 ft-lbs |
| Overflow pipe retaining nut torque | 15 to 17 ft-lbs |
| Injection pipe retaining nut torque | 19 to 25 ft-lbs |
Injection pump check
The pump check is done on the tractor with an injection pump pressure tester connected in place of the injection pipes. It covers the fuel tightness of the pump elements and delivery valves, and the injection timing.
| Item | Specification | Service limit |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel tightness of pump element | Must reach 1991 psi (13.73 MPa) | |
| Fuel tightness of delivery valve, time for pressure to fall from 1991 to 1849 psi | 10 seconds or more | 5 seconds |
| Injection timing, BX1880 (D722-E4) | 18.25° to 19.75° before TDC | |
| Injection timing, BX2380 (D902-E4) and BX2680 (D1005-E4) | 19.25° to 20.75° before TDC |
Injection timing is adjusted with shims under the pump. If the pump elements or delivery valves are below the service limit, the pump is replaced or sent to a Kubota-authorized pump service shop. Kubota specifies that the injection pump assembly must not be disassembled.
