The fan belt drives the cooling fan and the alternator from the crankshaft. Check the tension and condition every 100 hours. A loose or stretched belt slips, which can cause the engine to overheat and the battery to run down.
| Interval | Every 100 hours |
|---|---|
| Time | 15 minutes to check and adjust |
| Tools | Wrenches for the alternator mounting bolts, pry bar, ruler |
| Parts | Fan belt, if worn or damaged |
Warning. Stop the engine and remove the key before checking the fan belt.
Specification
| Belt deflection | 7 to 9 mm (0.28 to 0.35 in.) |
|---|---|
| Measured at | Middle of the span between the fan drive pulley and the alternator pulley |
| Force applied | 98 N (22 lbf), moderate thumb pressure |
Checking the tension
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, stop the engine and remove the key.
- Open the hood.
- Press on the belt with your thumb halfway between the fan drive pulley and the alternator pulley.
- Measure how far the belt moves. It must deflect 7 to 9 mm (0.28 to 0.35 in.).
Adjusting the tension
- Loosen the alternator mounting bolts.
- Place a pry bar between the alternator and the engine block. Pull the alternator outward until the belt deflection is within 7 to 9 mm (0.28 to 0.35 in.).
- Hold the alternator in position and tighten the mounting bolts.
- Recheck the deflection.
Inspecting the belt
Replace the belt if it is cracked, frayed or otherwise damaged. Also look at how the belt sits in the pulley groove. A good belt rides with its top near the top of the groove. A belt that is worn thin sinks deep into the groove and can no longer be tensioned correctly; replace it.
Replacing the belt
- Loosen the alternator mounting bolts and push the alternator toward the engine to slacken the belt.
- Remove the old belt from the pulleys.
- Fit the new belt into the grooves of all the pulleys.
- Set the tension as described above and tighten the mounting bolts.
