The BX has two in-line fuel filters. Fuel flows from the tank through the first filter below the frame, into the electric fuel pump, then through the second filter on the left side of the engine before it reaches the injection pump. Both filters use the same part. Check them every 100 hours and replace both every 400 hours.
Kubota lists filter replacement as a dealer service because the fuel system has to be opened and bled afterward. The procedure is below for owners who do their own work.
| Interval | Check every 100 hours. Replace every 400 hours. |
|---|---|
| Time | 10 minutes to check, 30 minutes to replace both and bleed |
| Tools | Pliers for the hose clamps, rag, small drain pan, clean plugs for the hose ends |
| Parts | 2 fuel filters |
Filter locations
Checking the filters
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, stop the engine and remove the key.
- Find both filters using the figures above.
- Look for dirt, sediment or water in the filters. Water shows up as clear droplets or a layer at the bottom, separate from the diesel. If either filter is clogged or has water in it, replace both.
- Check the fuel hoses at both filters. Replace any hose that is cracked, hard, swollen or wet with fuel, and any clamp that is loose or rusted.
Water in a filter means there is water in the tank. Drain the tank or have it cleaned before installing new filters, or the new filters will load up again.
Replacing the filters
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, stop the engine and remove the key.
- Place a rag or small pan under the filter to catch fuel.
- Slide the hose clamps back off the filter nipples.
- Note the direction of the filter, then pull the hoses off. On the engine filter, loosen the pipe clamp that holds the filter in place.
- Plug the hose ends with clean plugs if they will be open for more than a moment. Dirt that gets into the line goes straight to the fuel pump.
- Install the new filter in the same direction as the old one. If the filter body has a flow arrow, the arrow points toward the engine.
- Push the hoses fully onto the nipples and slide the clamps back into place over them.
- Repeat for the second filter.
- Bleed the fuel system. See fuel system bleeding.
- With the engine running, check both filters for leaks.
Fuel
Use No. 2 diesel above 14 °F and No. 1 diesel below 14 °F. Fuel must meet ASTM D975 with a cetane number of at least 45. Keep the tank full when the tractor is parked to limit condensation, and do not run the tank dry. An empty tank lets air into the system and the fuel system must be bled before the engine will run.
If you run biodiesel blends, replace the fuel filters every 200 hours instead of 400. Biodiesel absorbs water more readily than straight diesel and can restrict the filters in cold weather.
