BX1880 / BX2380 / BX2680 Owner Service Guide

The brake pedal works the brakes through a rod with a turnbuckle. Too little pedal free travel makes the brakes drag; too much reduces braking force. Check free travel and smooth operation daily, and adjust it every 100 hours even if it is still within specification.

Specification

Initial setting at the turnbuckle10 mm (0.4 in.) free travel, then extend the turnbuckle 1 more turn
Final free travel25 to 35 mm (1.0 to 1.4 in.)

Free travel is the distance the pedal moves before the brakes start to engage, measured at the pedal.

Brake pedal free travel

Daily check

Press the brake pedal by hand until you feel resistance and check the free travel against the specification. Work the pedal a few times and make sure it moves smoothly and returns fully. Adjust it if the free travel is out of range or the pedal does not return.

Adjusting free travel

The turnbuckle and lock nut are on the brake rod under the right side of the tractor, just ahead of the right rear tire.

Brake rod turnbuckle and lock nut ahead of the right rear tire
  1. Chock the wheels and release the parking brake.
  2. Loosen the lock nut on the turnbuckle.
  3. Turn the turnbuckle to change the rod length until the pedal free travel is 10 mm (0.4 in.).
  4. Extend the turnbuckle 1 additional turn.
  5. Tighten the lock nut.
  6. Press the brake pedal several times, then measure the free travel. It must be 25 to 35 mm (1.0 to 1.4 in.).

If you cannot bring the free travel into specification, schedule service.

Troubleshooting

SymptomPossible cause
Brakes dragFree travel too small, weak or broken pedal return spring, worn brake actuator, rusted brake cam
Poor braking forceFree travel too large, worn brake discs, warped actuator, damaged brake cam or lever, wrong transmission fluid

The wrong transmission fluid can also cause poor braking. Use Kubota Super UDT-2. See transmission fluid change.
